Homo a Gogo Meeting Minutes
too busy...
July 7, 2002
Facilitator: Bridget
Announcements:
Eli and Amanda handed out flyers in San Fransisco!
Updates
Bands: A weird week. Close to confirmation:
Juha, one of Rudy-from-Scutterfest's bands, Skin Job, Deep Dick Collective,
Boy Pussy. Will have Bands/Booking meeting this week.
Beth's Corner: .org site has Task/Timeline Calendar that we are getting behind on. People need to get their submissions for program text to Faith. Detailed budgets for each committee are due on the 21st.
Publicity: Johanna's wasn't there, and what happened with Punk Planet?
Art: Had a meeting and got some great ideas. HomoaGogo coloring book. Art swap - collaborative swapping environment, festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own art to share with others. Looking into phantom galleries, Bridget had some sources for that. Art will have it's own section on the web site soon, including a place for art submissions. Erin has been looking for comic artists. Ed wants some help curetting the Homocore Exhibit (at the Capitol Theater?)
Suggested spaces: Above the Urban Onion, Olympia Ballroom.
Beth suggested that ONE person be responsible for finding gallery and workshop space for the festival, and Bridget offered to be that person.
Merchandise: T-shirt designs are due next Sunday, but we all voted on "Design Number Four" as our benefit t-shirt design. Ed wants to use the heart/wings logo as much as possible, and everybody agreed that the heart/wings logo will defiantly be used for the official Homo a Gogo t-shirts.
Jeri is making temporary tattoos!! Erin is working on patches and little buttons.
Passes: are going to be kept at $55 since they are beginning to sell.
Film Shaping: There have been 9 submissions with different themes, and the Film committee will get together and vote on them after the due date. We CAN take Super 8 submissions as well as most other film formats. Preview copies should be sent to Bridget as VHS copies, please.
We could rent "Queer Geographies" for $30, that's a possibility for a feature length film.
There are 6 2 hour slots availible for feature length and shorter films, possibly a 7th slot open on MOnday is Sleater Kinney agrees to play. If they do, we could possibly show "Group" on that day. We also discussed having "Group" play before the festival on it's own, for various reasons.
We want more short films, as oppossed to feature length films. We talked about pursuing certian film0makers like Tami from Mr. Lady, Miranda July, Sadie Benning, and others. Ed mentioned the Flaming Films Festival and suggested that we contact Lisa about getting her to show some of those films.
Next Sunday after the meeting we will try to have a video screening with Cindy's projector. It will be either at Midnight Sun, Liz's house, or the Dub Narcotic Studio (later on in the night.)
Film Workshops: Work with Olympia Film Society, "Group" workshop maybe?
Want more queer youth film.
TV slots and promos: Cindy's bigger and better promo will be screened at the screening next week.
Liz is moving out and wants more roommates!!! If you are interested talk to her. :)
Next Week's Agenda:
Ed's Freak Out Session (10 minutes or less)

New: Katy, Erin, Kate
Announcements
Cindy will be playing at Traditions this
Friday, June 28, 8pm?
Also, Cindy has video editing gear at her home;
working on making a short spot for Dyke TV, 30 sec. w/ festival dates and acts,
some confirmed band footages and possibly shots from hagg org meetings. Jenna
and Amanda said they had footage; also Ed mentioned Tricia Ableson at KRS.
Events/Parties
Elliat is hosting an afternoon with
bbq and all girl bands, Sunday, July 14. At the Pink House, 4pm. Bands that will
play are: The Haggard, Pom Pom Meltdown, Polkadot Chokealot, Delta Dart, Tre,
and Cindy Wonderful.
The date changed from July13th since someone doing a
benefit for Free Radio will be promoting the show. Elliat has images and will be
making flyers for the show & bbq.
Liz and Eli will be having a rummage
sale/bbq (and secret cafÈ?), on Sunday July 27th. Everyone can just come and
bring stuff to sell.
Updates
Workshops: There will be one about the
situation in Palestine/Israel and solidarity work; the committee is currently
looking for spaces, to try and see if they can accommodate more workshops.
Merch: Will be organizing a meeting to have an initial check-in. They will
have a silkscreening party prior to the Homo Hustler party, and are working on
compiling a calendar of events/timeline. Brandy is going to the bins to get
shirts. There are stores in Seattle that might sell the merch, and possibly
someone can sell them at Pride next weekend?
Film/Video: We talked about having a
workshop about the making of Group (and they might screen it the day before).
Sending submissions forms out.
Art: no updates. But we have new people
interested in art--Katy and Erin!
Bands: Got Lynn Breedlove! And Sini
Anderson and Inga Muscio might also come. S-K said no, The Butchies have
something else, Tribe 8 has to get back to us. Eli is contacting Limpwrist and
Rudy. JUHA wants to come but canít afford to (it will cost a couple thousand to
fly them in), Gravy Train wants $500 plus airfare; due to budget restrictions we
have offered $350. Cindy contacted Deep Dick Collective and the SkinJobs, but
they havenít gotten back to her; sheís also checking on str8 Edge,
14yearoldgirls, and asking Tami to talk to Harum Scarum. Ed called J.D. from Le
Tigre, but hasnít heard back. Bratmobile is supposed to talk to us--they want
travel expenses covered. The Bands committee is trying to get more boy bands.
Talked about trying to get more Headliners. People suggested getting Suzi Quatro
and Joan Jett.
Publicity: Johannah, Courtney, and Ed made CD-Rs of confirmed
bands to send to press for publicity. Ruth will help with envelopes.
Johannah tried to get ahold of Dyke
TV--they havenít gotten back to her yet.
Lindsay had the idea to contact
good record labels and have them link to our site.
Nomy will have an article
on hagg in the next co-op news (this might be after july)
Will post to all
of the message boards (Johannah already posted on K and Chainsaw-no response
yet).
People wanting to work on the Tami Hart benefit show with the Gossip
should talk to Johannah.
Fiscal: Talked about who we want to sponsor
us--non-corporate, independent businesses and progressive organizations. Thought
of (for example): Pride Foundation, Feminist Health, Black Hills Pride, etc. How
do people feel about asking for sponsorship from the Advocate, Girlfriends, etc?
We also thought of Gucci, Dulce & Gabbana (seriously). Also there are some
SF lube companies that sponsor events.
Bank Account-havenít heard back
about. Talking to IRS on Monday.
No other committee updates.
Homo Hustler Party!
Donít have a
venue, looking for one. Might need to postpone the event. Kate had the idea of
finding a house for sale and renting it for the day/night.
Scheduling
Right now our schedule looks like
this:
wkshps 12-2
film 3-5
bands 5:30-7:30
showcase doors at 8,
show until 1
Late Night film/Drag show/other event 2-4
We thought of
having drag performers/spoken word/djs for 15 minutes between bands.
There was also mention of having Jackie Hell and Ursula Android of Faux Bang! MC; they might also have contact for more queer bands from Seattle.
SK8 like a girl is also going on, Sat
& Sun at the skate park.
Johannah had the idea of having a different
event instead of one of the band showcases. We have 18+ or- people booked/ 13
bands.
Cindy talked about having a fashion
show. We discussed working out the details. Ed mentioned tech & timing
concerns about having the show right before bands, citing that previous fashion
shows at the Capitol Theater took several hrs to set up, etc. Thus we
brainstormed about having an outdoor fashion show, a show without a runway, an
early evening showcase in a smaller venue. Luoda, Aura, and Faith oversaw the
previous fashion show. Elliat mentioned getting a proposal from people
interested in doing the fashion show. For venues we talked about the Olympia
Center, Heart and Soul, FOE--at the next meeting Cindy might have more info.
We talked about cutting out one of the small 5:30-7:30 band showcases, or
incorporating the fashion show into one of those times.
Sara Seinberg will be doing an open
mic/kvetsch. Courtney talked about promoting the open mic so that people will
bring chapbooks, etc. She also suggested setting up a cafÈ environment where
people can drink mochas and read/listen to poetry. We talked about setting up
Darbyís for this, or having a rollergirl (people) team to deliver food to the
Capitol Theater. But this might bring up issues with the Capitol Theater. Maybe
we can just convince Darbyís to stay open later that night.
Weíll have a
film late night on Thursday and Saturday, leaving Friday for the open mic/kvetsch.
We could also have a 1 hr each drag
and fashion show--but people wanted to have more time for drag (2 hrs). Liz will
be organizing the drag show-she wants to set up a submission form on the
website. Courtney is getting in contact with Oasis in Tacoma for youth drag
stuff. Trevor has contact with Destinyís.
Addendum
Bridget has info on Ingersollís book
club, if anyoneís interested. She also mentioned that the lgbt community center
has just opened in Seattle.
Agenda for next week:
Passes
Art
Film/Vid timing (f/v at
5:30-7:30 instead of 3:30-5:30 one time?)
Homo Hustler Party
Workshops
from 12-2
Next week
Bridget will facilitate, Cindy will keep time,
and Courtney will take notes.

June 16, 2002
Intros
Ed forgot to write
down who was new. We also didn't pass around sign up sheets for the new
people.
Faith made some really nice intro to HAGG packets with info about the
festival, background and minutes.
Film update:
By Hook Or By
Crook is confirmed. Film cmte had a mtg. and is working on some benefits
including a showing of Paris is Burning in Tacoma. The submission form is out
and they are collecting submissions. They want to make sure there's enough
shorts in the festival. Currently they are getting preview copies, not show
quality copies and aren't confirming anything else yet.
Program: Faith has ad specs but needs to talk to Beth to confirm some info before going forward
Band: The band committee met and decided to try to book a near equal number of boys and girls. They are contacting Lim Wrist, JUHA, Rudy (Scutterfes), Gravy Train, Deep Dick Kollective and the Skinjobs. Still no confirmation from Harum-Scarum, the Butchies, Tribe 8 and Sleater-Kinney. Cindy Wonerful made a list of spoken word performers. The cmte decided to contact one big performer, that person is Kate Borstein. If she says no they will choose another.
Merch: Elliat has asked some
people to do designs for t-shirts, etc. She is looking into stores in Seattle to
sell shirts to raise money for HAGG.
Elliat needs benefit schedule so she can
have merch ready for benefits.
HOS: HOS need to do a team mtg. Jeanie is working on it. Jeanie has received her dare from beth: a pre-written comedy routine at the festival.
Workshops: Kate at the cafe suggested a queers in school workshop. Elliat suggested a workshop about working with queers in prison. Ed suggested that the workshops be a little more fun and have a participatory element.
Publicity: Johanna put out email to her comittee and no one responded so she is going forward with her plan. She needs help burning cds for the press kits, which are scheduled to be mailed out on Friday.
Poster
Blake was supposed
to bring a poster with a different design but he's not here. Johanna advocated
for the bands to be listed on the poster because it will interest people more
and is different than the original flyers. Everyone agreed to this. The Posters
won't be printed until July.
Bands discussion:
update/background: the bands list was compiled by Ed and then by passing the
list around at 2 or 3 different HAGG meetings. The band committee then
prioritized the list. In picking bands it's important to look at the big picture
of what we want the festival to look like musically (genres, boys, girls,
trannies, etc.). In deciding who to ask it's important to weigh issues of who
we'd like to play with issues of will the band draw people to the festival, how
much will it cost to have them play, is the artist and travel fee worth the
expense (ie. Will it pay off in attendance). We also try to decide whether each
band furthers the agenda of the festival as a whole. We currently have lost our
venue for afternoon shows because of Thekla closing. The Limelight isn't
conducive to the afternoon shows. Ed also checked out the Capitol Playhouse
which was also too expensive and not conducive to our schedule.
Spaces
suggested for the afternoon show:
FOE, WCPA, Olympia ballroom
midnight
sun, voyeur
maybe rent a storefront? old hardbody gym? bernie's
garage?
trevor wants to discuss the schedule next week.
Concerns were mentioned about the Butchies drawing protesters. Courtney feels we should have a workshop to counteract.
drag show: trevor is
interested in the drag queens from Tacoma being involved
Liz wants to run the
drag show.
Jerry would like drag performers between bands, but there may be
tech issues.
Courtney asked if kings and queens would be together or in two
different shows? Everyone said no to splitting up kings and queens.
Spoken
word: the band cmte isn't sure how many? How many between bands or as longer
performances. How will having them between bands affect the flow of the evening?
A new guy (I'm sorry I can't remember yr name!) volunteered to work on
spoken word/performance art performers booking.
people want variety: dj,
drag, spoken word, comedy etc. between bands
agenda for next
week:
film shaping
schedule
fun meeting or bbq or rummage at liz's and
eli's
facilitator: leah
minutes:
celeste
time/vibe: Courtney
Evaluation: Some were distracted by the cafÈ environment. Others were happy to eat. Ed was frustrated that the bands discussion didn't give the band cmte much direction. Liz liked the discussion just to hear the background and understand the process.

The final discussion resulted in changing the format of the meeting slightly. 1) we need to start right at 1:30, please be on time 2) we will spend the first 45 minutes with updates/announcements, then after a SHORT break we will spend the next 45 minutes focusing on one aspect of the festival. to decrease their budget any way we can so we can donate more to the Gender

deliberation

agenda, 5 minutes at end for meeting evaluation and review commitments
Voting
style--consents (everyone concurs), stand asides, blocks
Functions (all
rotated)-- Notetaker (Commitments review, "action item review"), Facilitator
(Look for commonalities, check in with people who aren't talking), Timekeeper,
Vibeswatcher (check the room, say "maybe we could take a break")
Get
notebook--3-ring binder (johannah) to hold previous minutes
Build
agenda--structured and lined out in advance, suss out meeting structure
together
Agenda review of items at beginning of meetings--does it require
opinion, advice, discussion, decision and how long will it
take
Proposals--written out for larger decision, a significant change that
gives background, options with pros and cons, and makes a recommendation with
the reasons why. The proposals should be distributed before the meeting for
prior review and aggreement noted.
Decisions made by group about our meeting
structure:
agenda review at beginning and end
vibes and time is the same
person, facilitator, notetaker (use laptop or sent to group by wed.) all decided

Gallery in Seattle a benefit.
Flea market, June 8th at 5th and
Washington from 8-4:
Jeannie had a sign-up sheet made for table shifts and
she will have that available at the next meeting with 2 hour slots at two
tables. We need to provide our own tables (Johannah said that K has some and Ed
said that the theatre has some). There will be baking goods, Homo shirts, and
stuff. Donations drop-off may be at Dumpster Values. Jeannie will talk to Kanako
or Angie. Amanda and Bre are making a flyer that has instructions for donations.
Jeannie will give them the 411. On the tables will be groups of prices. Bridget
has offered to mow your lawn naked at $50 per one-half hour.
Dyke TV:
Johannah will email them

Amanda and Jen will look at dyketv.org for the format and come to the next
meeting with ideas. The 3-4 minute clip can be shot with a number of dv cameras
available. (Subsequent email from Lisa wanted more info and the possibility of
her shooting some footage too.) Blake will provide graphics to
Trevor.
Photobooth pix for
Venus:
collected by Johannah. DIY Ed where's yours? Need by Tuesday to send
out. Others need to get them to Johannah asap and there is no guarantee on how
they will be used. (Subsequent email from Johannah showed the
article.)
Committee communication and steering
committee formation:
Beth talked about using the main list only for general
information and replying with an individual response only to a specific person
not the whole group (you might have to copy and paste). Lisa has since
unsubscribed because there are too many emails going back and forth where only a
few people are involved. There have been other complaints. Meet with your
committees and email them as a group. See the org site for contacts and the
updated committee list. Several people are complaining about not having met with
their committees yet and that they weren't included in making up a
budget.

Fundrasing Party:
Beth and Johannah met about the HAGG
Hustler Party and figured out estimated
budget and revenue, based on 100
people attending the event and drinking at
least 4 drinks a
piece.
Cost: $550
Anticipated gross
revenue (before expenses): $1,550
Anticipated net revenue (after expenses):
$1,000
There will be a $3 cover charge to
get into the party. Well drinks will cost
$2/each; fancy liquor will cost
$3/each.
We currently donít have enough (okay,
any) money to put the event on, and so
Beth proposed the idea of postponing
the event until July, and hosting a
benefit for the benefit (advertised as a
benefit for HAGG) on June 8th
instead, asking Liar Bird, Madam Morte, Nomy
Lamm and others(?) to perform
at The Voyeur (?) . The group decided this
would be a good idea, and set a
new date of July 6th for the Hustler
Party.
Action Item: Beth and Johannah will
be looking into the all-ages factor at
The Voyeur.
Other benefits:
Jenna and Amanda
are hosting a house party on June 22 as a HAGG benefit!
Venus Photos:
Venus Zine is
writing a feature article on HAGG, and asked for photos. Jenna
had the idea
of sending them black and white photo booth photos of the
organizers. Great
idea!
Action Item: Everybody needs to go
their photos taken at a B&W photo booth.
In Olympia, there is one at
Skateland. Bring these photos to the next mtg.
Budget Guidelines & Consensus
Decision Making:
Beth and Teresa distributed budget
guidelines to assist committees in
developing their budget. The group talked
about the decision making process
for developing the overall festival
budget. Committees will be submitting
budget proposals, and part of the
resp. of the fiscal committee is to
evaluate how each committeeís budget
will work within the overall festival
budget. The group agreed that the
fiscal committee will have the authority
to negotiate budget proposals (for
example-and this is just an example-
asking the band committee if they can
shave off $XX from their overall
budget, as the film and video people really
need $XX to accomplish Y).
This led into a discussion about our
general decision making process, and
the group discussed adopting a
consensus-based decision making model. We
agreed to put this discussion on
the agenda for next week before formally
adopting this model, as several
coordinators weren'tít in attendance at this
meeting, and we wanted them to
be part of the discussion.
We also talked about how we need to
clearly define what consensus decision
making is, and Pat Maley agreed to
offer a brief education presentation at
the May 26 mtg. (He wonít be at the
5/19 mtg).
Here is what Beth and Teresa distributed:
HOMO A GOGO GUIDELINES FOR BUDGET SUBMISSION
Things to consider when drafting your budget and spending money:
1. Ask for what you need and don't
cut yourself short, but also remember
that
there are limits.
2. When drafting your budget, think
of things in terms of categories/lin
items
(e.g. artist payment, travel
expenses, copying costs, postage).
3. It may be useful to begin by
defining the goals/purpose of your
committee,
and then talk about what
you need to accomplish that goal. Consider what you
might be able to get for
free/trade/etc., but be sure to include a dollar
amount
in case the
trade/donation doesn't come through.
4. You will need to keep track of
your budget (e.g. how much you've spent).
GET
RECEIPTS FOR ALL PURCHASES.
GIVE ALL RECEIPTS TO THE FISCAL COORDINATORS.
REIMBURSEMENT REQUIRES RECEIPTS OR COPY OF EXPENDITURE.
5. Budget deadline: MAY 26th
6. Budget example: EXPENSE
AMOUNT
1. Artist Payment $5,000
2. Postage $50
3. Telephone $25
4.
Equipment $200 (possible donation from
music6)
TOTAL $5,275
Committee Updates:
Website: The website is up. Blake is
waiting for some text from Ed. Passes
will be available soon. Please let
Blake know what you think.
Ideas:
<sum> Put a publicity
flyer to print under the "I want to help" section,
that people can print out
and distribute-free advertising!
<sum> Talk to buyolympia about
the possibility of adding a donation option
to pass sale website purchases
so that people can donate money through their
credit card while buying their
pass (eg.adding $5 - $25 to the cost of their
pass as a donation to HAGG).
Ladyfest did this, and people donated. Blake
will talk to Pat Castaldo about
this.
Program/Scheduling:
We need to
come up with the program size so that we know what weíre looking
at in terms
of ad sizes. Faith will be coming up with some ideas, and
bringing this to
the next mtg. Once we determine how much space we need for
HAGG stuff, the
actual number of pages in the program will be informed by
the number of ads
we sell.
Bands:
Bands is continuing to
contact people and setting stuff up. Amanda brought
up the fact that we have
a lot of female performers/bands confirmed-but what
about the boy bands??
Please let the band committee know of any potential
boy bands we can
ask.
We also talked about the need to keep
the submission -booking process open
and above the table, so that everyone
knows what is going on. We discussed
the need for developing criteria around
the band selection process, with an
emphasis on why we would turn a band
down. The band committee will work on
developing this criteria.
We also agreed that we would like the
curatorial committees (bands,
workshops, film, art) to bring weekly updates
to the meetings -ie. a
running list of what performers have been contacted,
the status of the
contract negotiation, the amount they will be paid,
etc.
Other band considerations:
In
determining how much to pay a band, Pat M. shared the considerations that
Yoyo uses:
1. Number of people in the band
2. The distance they have
to travel
3. What kind of name draw they have
Fiscal:
We turned in a grant
proposal to the Community Sustaining Fund asking for
$10000. Teresa and Ed
will be presenting our request to them this Saturday.
(UPDATE: the
presentation went well we should hear within a week).
We also put in a request to PFLAF for
501(c)3 fiscal sponsorship, and should
hear back from them this week.
(UPDATE: also looks positive. They are
interested, but have questions. We
will present at their next board mtg,
june 10).
End of Meeting wrap up:
Pat
Maley proposed that we take some time at the end of each mtg to vibe
assess
the mtg-check in with each other about how the meeting went,
communication
problems/suggestions, and the general atmosphere. Agreed this
was a good
idea.
This meeting vibe -groovy
