Mirah

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn (her first name pronounced as to rhyme with the former Italian currency) was born on September 17, 1974 at her parents then home on Westview st. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The youngest of three, Mirah grew up mostly in Bala Cynwyd, a suburb of Philadelphia. In her waning teen years, Mirah moved to Olympia, Washington to attend The Evergreen State College and found herself, four funny years later, with a diploma in her hands and a festoon of flowers about her neck. Continuing to reside in Olympia following graduation, she began making music by default, teaching herself to play guitar and composing 'songs', releasing her first album (Storageland) on Yoyo Recordings in 1997. Proudly joining the roster of other fine artists on the K record label in 1999, she began to experiment with recording, producing some material by herself and also working with her close friend and favorite person to record with ever, Phil Elvrum. Two fantastic albums, You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This (KLP112) and Advisory Committee (KLP135), have since been released by Mirah on K. Known by herself and her friends to be mostly gay!, Mirah is modest and deliberate, preferring privacy to invasion and reconciliation to war. Her middle name means good day or holy day in Hebrew. In the fall of 2001 Mirah moved back to Philadelphia but spends most of her time on the road.

The Haggard

I canít think straight with this shit hammering in my head. Images of bicycles and gym teachers and feminism invade my brain and Iím starting to question my sexuality. Who are these loud gay women who come to town and abduct narrow minded corporate zombies and turn them into modern art fags? The answer is Emily B. Kingan on guitar, sts on the drums, and together they are the Haggard. The Haggard got their start in September 1998 in the town of Durham NC, home of their label, Mr. Lady, and queer compatriots the Butchies.  Taking frequent trips up the east coast,  they played their very first shows with friends the Need, the Third Sex, and Harum Scarum.

Myth- The Haggard are just as corporate as any other punk rock venture.

Fact- Emily is a co-owner of a cooperative bike shop and sts makes a living making bike-tube bracelets.

Myth- Emily and sts are girlfriends.

Fact- They are just good friends.

Myth- The Haggard secretly drive their tour van everywhere!

Fact- They rode their bikes from Portland to San Francisco for gay ride and upon their arrival,    played two shows in one night.

Liarbird

The name "liar bird" may be one of the single greatest misnomers of the bay bird world & the greatest disservice ever done to the bay angler. Although there are instances in whichthese small terns are meaninglessly banging along like airborne mullet, there are also times when they are great indicators of the presence of minnows, shrimp & other forage. Never underestimate the eyes of a "liar bird." They often tell the truth.

TRACY + THE PLASTICS

shake to the lo-fi beats of a really cold basement + they move to the anti-fi "I want a gold tooth" of VHS And you want to be wearing a half-shirt that meets the skin in Technicolor. Sextional

The Sextional play agro-sex rock, a hazardous byproduct of a sexual environment. Emily Kingan of the Haggard, Tami Hart solo exdrodinare, and Nicki Nevlin of Rotophone met in Los Angeles one October night at a hot tub party. They shaped a powerful bond of love , sex, and music that cannot be quenched. The sound is strong, screaming, and smooth. Haggard growls and syrupy melodies play over punchy base lines, dissonant guitar and pounding drums. Now, when the time is right, the three meet again to rekindle their passion.

deep dick collective

The fag has entered and the cypher is stalled. The anti-gangster aesthetic of quasi-Nationalist "conscious" hip-hoppers and bohemian MC thrift shoppers pave a space for D/DC to articulate its word play. They represent a political lyricism that does not take itself too seriously. they are the brave mavericks of a movement that some affectionately refer to as homo-hop. They are Oxymoronic "out" black queer Emcees the world says do not exist. They are the rumblings of a revolution that have for too long been silenced. Overstand? It's not that deep.

Visit the Deep Dick Collective website.

Squab

Squab is an endlessly mutating experiment in crossing The Germs with James Brown. They're hard to pin down but easy to love! They live in Long Beach, they like cats, they're multi-racial, multi-talented, quasi-androgynous and fully rocked up! Come see them at your local indie-rock hole in the wall, and remember folks - it's OK to sing along and shake your ass at the same time!

Hot N' Heavy

This isnt your ordinary when boy meets girl band. We must give great thanks to Chaka Khan who brought these two awesome talents together. With Rudy president of the East L.A. Chaka Khan fanclub and Dolly a fanatic with life club membership---we now have a "Hot n' Heavy" sound that keeps the crowd dancing and begging for more. There is no doubt why these two have such great chemistry--with Dolly's fine Jennifer Lopez style ass and Rudy Bleu's boyish good looks and charm (FYI: there's all man, no boy in the bedroom we hear) its a sound we've all been looking for in an electronic band. Hot n' Heavy sex does not compare to this Hot n' Heavy band....that is unless it's with one of these wild and crazy members.

The Dolly Ranchers

Turning country music on its ear, the Dolly Ranchers have been compared to everyone from Patti Smith to Freakwater.  Hailing from the high desert of northern New Mexico, this all girl alt-country quartet create ramblings on whiskey, passion, and the romance of the open road.  The Albuquerque Journal rated the bands first recording 'Ten O'clock Bird', as one of the top ten New Mexico releases of 2000 saying,  "Among other things that separate it forn the new country rabble are a lovely sense of melody and great vocal harmonies."

The Dolly Ranchers bring to the stage and to their recordings that feeling of travel and adventure; a road show in an unexpected place, of hitchhiking on that lonesome sunny highway.  And it is no surprise, in the end, that they are all circus performers with the One Railroad Circus of New Mexico.

The group consists of Sarah-Jane Moody and Amy Bertucci sharing vocals, "twang that alternates between the gritty gravel and the sweet clouds", Marisa Anderson on guitar, "lightning fast and sweet as a peach", and Anne Cullerton holding down on the bass, "keeping the honkey tonk as tonky as it can be".

TJO hails from louisville KY and lives there with homo a go go bandmate, Kristina from half-seas-over (a TJO produced powerhouse). Maybe they will be moving soon to a time zone near you. Maybe she will be retiring, catch her before she catches the sun...

Spoken Word

Kate Bornstein

Kate Bornstein, author of Gender Outlaw and My Gender Workbook, has three projects in progress: an autobiographical porn novel roughly based on Voltaire's Candide, called Hard Candy. Her new play, "Strangers In Paradox," opens in San Francisco's Theater Rhinoceros' 25th Anniversary Season, March 13th 2002. And Kate is working on a new book tentatively titled, "Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Teen Suicide."

KATE BORNSTEIN presents "POST 9/11: WHAT'S QUEER GOT TO DO WITH IT?" Ever since September 11th 2001, the US has been rapidly reverting to its Puritanical roots. America's home-grown schoolyard bully culture is encouraged at more and more levels of society. Straight-appearing lesbian women, gay men, bi's and trannies can for the most part duck under the bully radar; but where does that leave the more radical queers? Kate Bornstein insists there's not only an answer to this conundrum; but that the queerest of the queers may in fact provide an important key to the next step in the evolution of the USA as a free society. Kate's electrifying and characteristically humorous presentation will be followed by a wide-open Q&A session for all attendees.
